DISEASES OF SOYBEAN - PHYTOPHTHORA ROOT ROT

Phytophthora root rot of soybean is caused by the soil-borne water mold Phytophthora sojae. Root rot is a common disease that can attack soybeans at virtually any phase of their growth. The disease may initially be detected when patches of plants fail to emerge, particularly in areas in a field that are excessively wet. Further examination of these areas may turn up seedlings similar to the one shown in this photo that have rotted after germination, but before they have emerged above the soil surface. Other seeds may have even rotted prior to germination.
