DISEASES OF SMALL GRAINS - BARLEY YELLOW DWARF/RED LEAF

The best way to control barley yellow dwarf/red leaf is through avoidance of the aphid vector, particularly during the susceptible seedling phase. This can be accomplished by planting winter wheat late in the fall, after aphid populations have declined. For spring wheat, barley and oats, plant early in the spring so that substantial plant growth can occur prior to aphid arrival. During the growing season, when aphids are present, insecticide treatments to control aphids may help limit spread of BYDV. However, this strategy may not be cost effective, and may have limited utility if large numbers of aphids move into a field from a non-treated area. Finally, selection of grain varieties that are tolerant of the virus, or are less desirable for aphid feeding may provide another line of defense.
