DISEASES OF SMALL GRAINS - ERGOT
Sclerotia serve as the resting or overwintering structure of the fungus. They can survive in the soil for many years. The disease cycle of C. purpurea begins after a cold period, and during high moisture conditions. Sclerotia germinate to form mushroom-like structures that produce spores. Spores are blown or splashed to flowering grain heads and, acting like pollen, infect the pistil and ovary.
