DISEASES OF ALFALFA - VERTICILLIUM WILT

If you suspect Verticillium wilt, be sure to dig up the infected plant and cut through the root system. Look for a thin ring of discoloration near the edge of the root (see arrow in the photo). This dark ring is the infected water conducting tissue. In this photo, compare the discolored vascular tissue of an infected plant (left), with the white root tissue of a healthy plant (right).
