SIGNS OF NEMATODES

With proper training, nematodes can be easily identified once they have been extracted from soil or infected plant material. The major problem in identification is that plant pathogenic nematodes are often intermixed with non-plant pathogenic nematodes. Typically, non-pathogenic nematodes dramatically outnumber pathogenic nematodes in such a mix. In order to help distinguish pathogenic from non-pathogenic nematodes, look for a STYLET (see arrow). A stylet is a modified tooth that helps a nematode puncture and feed on plant tissue.
